Frequently Asked Questions

When it snows, who digs out the fire hydrants?
When it snows and you have a fire hydrant on your property it is a good practice to shovel the snow away from the hydrant. This makes it easier for the fire department to locate the hydrant in a emergency situation.

Do I need to become a firefighter if I join?
No. We allow members to join as Rescue only. This means that if your interests are strictly in EMS, there's a place for you. No previous training is required. When you join as Rescue only, we will provide you with the training to become a NYS certified EMT-B. You can also take it to the next level and provide advanced life support as an EMT-CC.

Should I call 911 or the Islip Terrace FD directly in an emergency?
Calling 911 is always a way to get help in an emergency but calling direct can lead to an improved response time. Direct calls are connected to one of our dispatchers on premises with immediate access to activating an emergency response from the department. Our Emergency Hotline number is 581-5437(kids) which is staffed around the clock.
