Islip Terrace Fire Department

A new law goes into effect on April 1, 2019 requiring all battery-operated smoke alarms sold in New York State
be equipped with non-removable, 10-year batteries!

Smoke detectors should be replaced every 10 years even if you think it still works. The new law requires all new or replacement smoke detectors in New York State to be powered by a 10-year, sealed, non-removable lithium battery if it isn't hardwired to the home. Retailers will no longer be able to sell anything other than these devices, so when you replace your smoke detector it will need to be replaced with one that complies with the new law.

All smoke detectors should be tested monthly
Smoke alarms also need to be cleaned to remove any dust, cobwebs, pet fur or debris that may have made their way into the unit

HINT: A blow dryer makes easy work of blowing debris out of your smoke alarm!
